Samsung’s foldable Galaxy X phone glimpsed in official-looking video

It’s no secret that Samsung is working on a foldable phone. The Korean manufacturer even revealed a prototype back in November 2018; a darkened stage hid the phone’s exact look and features from us, but it was certainly there, in all its bendable glory.

That phone is back, in an official Samsung video that was seemingly accidentally leaked by the firm’s Vietnam YouTube channel. The promotional footage was quickly removed, and any fires quickly doused, but it was too little too late.

It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but the foldable phone is definitely there. The phone - currently named the Samsung Galaxy X - opens outwards to reveal an internal display that covers twice the surface area of a standard phone screen. The external screen remains lit as the Galaxy X is opened, although it seems more likely that this is simply to reiterate that the phone does in fact have two displays.

The device seems remarkably slim, particularly given the somewhat chunky handset we saw on that darkened stage at the end of last year.

There’s no guarantee that this footage is legitimate, other than the closing Samsung logo and general high-budget feel of the thing. And even if it is an official promo, there are still a few reasons to be cautious - the video includes plenty of Samsung-branded technology that is clearly in concept or early prototype stages. The remote-controlled tattoo gun and wardrobe-sized motion-sensitive display, for example.

It seems likely that this promotional video is mixing real and future tech for marketing purposes. The Galaxy X is expected to go on sale this year, and it’s looking like we’ll get to see the phone in action over the coming months; 20 February marks the start of the Samsung Unpacked event in San Francisco, where the Galaxy X is near certain to make an appearance.

Perhaps we’ll see this footage resurface then - if not, then keep an eye on the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona on the 25th of the same month.
