Motorola launches sign up page to alert consumers when new Moto X smartphone details are available

Motorola continues to tease its mysterious and highly anticipated Moto X smartphone with a new sign-up page today , which will deliver new information to interested consumers via email as and when it’s available.

The Google subsidiary has given away almost nothing about the device, but this new webpage continues the general branding and message revealed in a full-page newspaper advert yesterday.

Motorola says the Moto X is “the first smartphone designed, engineered and assembled in the USA”, but confirms that it’s also a device that consumers can tweak themselves. “Because today you should have the freedom to design the things in your life to be as unique as you are,” the sign-up page description reads.

Motorola Mobility quietly updated its logo last week, picking up a new, lower case typeface that is more in-keeping with Google’s own branding and design aesthetic.

The Moto X smartphone remains a mystery, however. Consumers have been able to pick the color and internal storage that comes with their handset for sometime now, so it’s unclear what the mobile manufacturer is promising. Some have speculated that users will be able to hand pick individual parts rather like a traditional desktop PC, or perhaps the carrier, selection of apps and other software features.

The time frame or pathway for when Motorola will distribute more details is also still unclear. Given that Google has just started stocking the Google Edition HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 in the United States, it would make sense for Motorola to hold off until at least the end of the summer. It’s worth noting, however, that the company also said that Moto X was “coming soon” in its print newspaper ad, suggesting it won’t be long before all is revealed.

Eyes-on with the Samsung Galaxy NX Android camera, it has 4G LTE too, so you can also check your email

While the Android-powered devices that have been flowing freely from Samsung of late have largely been of the smartphone or tablet variety, the South Korean device maker has been known to throw in the odd Android camera here and there too. The Next Web went eyes-on with its newest offering, the Galaxy NX, at the company’s ‘Premier’ event in London on Thursday.

One of the key features of the camera is its 20.3-megapixel sensor and the fact that it offers versatility thanks to its interchangeable lense system. That said, it also doesn’t skimp on other specs, such as including an ‘advanced’ hybrid autofocus system with a 1/6000 sec shutter speed and 8.6fps shooting speed. It’s also one of the first camera’s to offer 4G LTE connectivity too, allowing you to shoot and upload at your own leisure – as well as most other things you can do on an Android device.

Obviously, another notable feature on the Galaxy NX is the fact that it runs an operating system designed for smartphones. As a result of this, some of its specs look far more at home on a smartphone, such as its 1.6GHz quad core processor, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, 2GB RAM and 16GB of on board storage.

There’s also a 4.8-inch HD TFT LCD screen for reviewing your snaps on board and you can easily switch between the Android home screen and the camera mode by swiping with one finger from the right-hand side of the screen to the left.

Thanks to its smartphone-like OS, there’s also access to a bunch of apps, such as Samsung’s own ChatOn client, S Voice, S Translator as well as the normal things you’d find on Android.

This Indiegogo project wants to bring credit card-sized smartphone power packs to the world

We’ve written a lot about the limited battery life of the modern smartphone, and how it needs to change in the future. A glimpse of that is being provided by an Indiegogo project out of Singapore that aims to introduce a wireless charger that’s about the size and width of a credit card.

The WiFlux project — first spotted by Tech In Asia — is seeking $100,000 to begin production of its lithium polymer (li-po) battery tech that can charge any device wirelessly. It won’t give a 100 percent charge like bulkier or cable-based chargers, but WiFlux could provide a 50 percent top-up without getting in the way.

If it can hit its lofty target, the wafer-thin charger will be available from January 2014. The estimated price is $39.90, but early-bird backers can reserve one for $35, two for $68 or get a customized version for $199. Entry to the beta test is $1,000.

I’d love a couple of portable chargers like this, but the project needs a lot of backers and exposure given these price points. WiFlux has 54 more days to hit the $100,000 goal.
