Save £200 on Google’s Pixelbook in the January sales
If you’re looking to upgrade your hardware, January is definitely the time to do it, with retailers seeking to one up each other on the tech bargains. And if you’re in the market for a new laptop, and don’t feel wedded to either Windows or Mac OS, then Google’s Pixelbook is certainly worth a look – especially when it’s £200 cheaper than normal .
Google raised a few eyebrows last year when it launched the Pixelbook at a Mac-baiting £999 RRP, given Chromebooks typically occupy the budget end of the market. But despite this, it still impressed us enough to recommend in our review. As Darien wrote at the time: “The sheer ergonomics of the Pixelbook make it a laptop you’ll want to use.”
Now John Lewis is offering a sizable £200 discount in this year’s January sales , meaning you can now grab the sleek Google Pixelbook for an impressive £799.
That still may seem a lot for a Chromebook, so what makes the Pixelbook so special? Well, most obviously the internals. With a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, this offers significantly more punch than your average Chromebook, and you can really feel the difference. The latest WiFi standard helps too, given Chrome OS is so cloud-based.
It’s also a true convertible, with the 2,400 x 1,600 display flipping neatly around for tablet functionality, making it both portable and versatile. You can combine this with the Pixelbook Pen (sadly sold separately) to take notes and doodle to your heart’s content.
While many convertibles end up looking more clunky than practical, the Chromebook doesn’t fall into this trap, and its design really is up there with the best of them. It’s sleek, light and the keyboard is one of the nicest we’ve used.
In short, it does pretty much everything right – except, you may be thinking, running Chrome OS. That will make it a tough sell for some, but as Darien wrote in his review, that may not be the deal breaker it was: “Yes, it’s still true that for some jobs a Chromebook isn’t the right choice and probably never will be. But take a look at your own everyday workflow and you might be surprised by how easily it maps onto the Pixelbook. Factor in all the simplicity and security of Chrome OS and you’ve got a highly persuasive alternative to the traditional ultraportable laptop.”
