Apex Legends Season 1: Battle Pass launches today

Apex Legends Season 1, also known as "Wild Frontier," will launch today at 5pm GMT alongside the new Battle Pass. The season of content will include a bucketload of new stuff for players to explore, including a total of 100 Battle Pass rewards and a brand new Legend to play as.

Like the Fortnite equivalent, the Apex Legends Battle Pass features a few freebies for players who haven't purchased it, but the overwhelming majority of interesting content is reserved for Battle Pass owners. This content includes new cosmetic items like player and weapon skins as well as Apex Credits and Apex Packs containing even more loot.

You'll unlock one item/skin/pack each time you level up your Battle Pass, from one all the way up to 100. We're not yet sure how you go about levelling up your Battle Pass, but we imagine it might involve playing Apex Legends.

The biggest news, however, is that Apex Legends will be getting a new character. They're called Octane, and we don't know masses about them – we're not even sure when they'll be available to use. We do know that they will definitely be arriving at some point during the "Wild Frontier" Battle Pass Season 1 period, which lasts for the next three months.

The Apex Legends Battle Pass costs 950 Apex Coins, which equates to around £8. If you'd like to buy the Battle Pass Bundle – which includes an instant jump of 25 levels and all the ensuing rewards – it'll cost you 2,800 Apex Coins, or around £25. Thankfully, it's looking like the Season 1 Battle Pass will give you enough Apex Coins to purchase the Season 2 Battle Pass .

Respawn has launched a battle royale game. The Titanfall developer clearly wants to make the most of the booming genre, and has given both consumer and competition a healthy shock by pulling an entire game seemingly out of thin air.

The game is called Apex Legends, and the official announcement took place yesterday at 8pm. The game then went and launched, as rumours had suggested, and is currently available to download on console and PC. For free.

The premise is one that has become pretty familiar in the past two years. In a nutshell, it’s a free-to-play battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe. Intriguingly, this means none of those giant machines they call Titans; just one huge map and a whole bunch of players fighting to be the last one standing.

Like Fortnite, you won’t have to pay to play, though there are in-game microtransactions. These are, of course, limited to cosmetic items.

A weekend of hefty leaks from eSports journalist Rod Breslau gave us a good idea of what to expect from Apex Legends, and they were all bang on. The developers opted for a slightly smaller player count - 60, rather than the standard 100 - and have introduced a class system to further distance themselves from the norm. Players can fight alone, as a duo, or in a group of three; otherwise, you'll find that plenty of standard battle royale mechanics make an appearance.

Breslau reported that Respawn invited a select few streamers to test Apex Legends in Los Angeles last week. In fact, the game has been in the works for some time now. In August 2017, Respawn and EA revealed that they were working on two new projects, one of which has since been revealed as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

The new game uses the same graphics engine as Titanfall 2, and will do battle with Call of Duty’s Blackout mode, Epic Games’ Fortnite, and the upcoming Battlefield V battle royale mode. It's out now on PS4 , Xbox One , and PC .
